Different Processes Involved In Pipe Fitting

The pipe fabrication process is different for different industries and depends upon their fluid transportation needs. While steel is the most commonly used material for pipes in a variety of industrial applications, it may not be the best fit for every scenario. There are multiple options among steel pipes, each with its own physical properties like corrosion resistance and different cost implications. Cast and ductile iron is used for sewer and stormwater systems. Copper and PVC pipes are also used in various industries.

The choice of the material and the fabrication process are just as important as choosing the right pipe fitter for the job. Seamless pipes might be costlier than welded pipes, but they might be the perfect operational choice for a business.

Pipe fitting is just as rich a topic as pipe fabrication and various materials used for making pipes. And if you are hiring pipefitters or getting custom fittings made for your pipes, it’s a good idea to become familiar with the process. It’s also important to note that pipe fitters need certification for certain processes, including:

Brazing

The process of using a molten filler material to join two pipes of the same or different materials is called brazing. The filler is called brazing material. Brass is quite commonly used but only where corrosion resistance is not a major issue. The difference between brazing and TIG welding is that in brazing, the metal of the pipe doesn't melt; only the brazing material does.

Torch Use / Soldering

When fitting copper, the pipe fitters may have to use blow torches (usually fueled by a single gas like propane) to solder two pipes together. The flame is not high enough for steel pipes.

Welding

Pipes of various materials, including but not limited to steel and iron, can be welded together using one of many welding techniques. If the pipe fitter is properly trained and follows the best practices, they may even be able to weld pipes to fit them together or strengthen a fitting while they are still carrying the fluids (even inflammable ones).

Threading

Another way to make two pipes fit together is to thread their exterior. It allows the pipe to acclimate a fitting more easily.

Grooving

Grooving pipes to make them fit together is done in two ways. The most common type is roll grooving, in which nothing is cut out from the pipe, so it produces minimal waste. Using the appropriate tool, a groove is pressed near the end of a pipe. The concept of cutting a groove is similar, but it produces a lot of waste.

These are just some of the processes associated with pipe fitting. Flanges are also quite commonly used to join pipes together in various industries, especially when a relatively intricate piping network is required. A good pipe fitter will follow the best practices and guidelines when it comes to tightening and torques when bolding flanges together.
